WWI: The assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. His assassination in the city of Sarajevo prompted Austria-Hungary to look into the murder. The assassin was Serbian, and Austria and Serbia were mortal enemies. Much like Greece and Troy, the two sides were basically looking for any reason to fight. After Serbia and Austria declared war on each other, Germany (Ally of Austria) declared war on Serbia. Serbia's allies, (Russia) joined in. After Germany threatened Belgium, all hell broke loose. At the end of the war, everyone blamed Germany and they were forced to pay crazy war reparations. The allies held a big meeting for dealing with the Central Powers, and the (first) Big Three: Georges Clemenceau, the Prime Minister of France. Woodrow Wilson, U.S. President. The Nazi's ( Nationalsozialistische) stirred the German people into fury by convincing them that Jews were responsible, and vowed to get rid of debt and rule Europe. Italy joined the Axis Powers because Britain promised them land during WWI, but they really got a raw deal (see the Big Three). Nationalists in Italy promised to restore the Roman Empire. Japan joined because they wanted an East Asia Empire. Germany annexed a bunch of German speaking countries around it (Austria) and then Poland. Britain/France, the rest of the Allies couldn't stand this any more, and declared war. Russia joined the allies after Germany executed the idiotic Barbarossa plan, to invade Russia.
