The British began to establish overseas colonies in the 16th century. By 1783, Britain had a large empire with colonies in America and the West Indies. This 'first British Empire' came to an end after the American Revolution.

Subsequent military and economic tensions between Britain and Germany were major causes of the First World War, during which Britain relied heavily upon its empire. The transfer of Hong Kong to China in 1997 marked for many the end of the British Empire. Fourteen overseas territories remain under British sovereignty.

Expansion of British Rule from 1803 to 1856:

• Great Britain made its first uncertain efforts to launch overseas settlements in the sixteenth century.

• Oceanic expansion, driven by viable ambitions and by competition with France, speeded in the 17th century and rose in the establishment of settlements in North America and the West Indies.

• Under Lord Dalhousie the 2nd Burmese War clashed in sharp contrast to the first
