This was basically a turf war between two political configurations to occupy the political/Ruling space vacated by the Congress Party seemingly in an irreversible decline in its fortunes under Rajiv Gandhi. This was famously known as the Mandal - Kamandal struggle by the political observers of the day.
Rajiv Gandhi, who rose to power in 1984 riding on the sympathy wave following his mother Indira Gandhi’s assassination with an unprecedented three fourth majority, but could not sustain his phenomenal mandate, and in fact could not muster even a simple majority in the next general elections held in 1989. All he could manage was to emerge as the leader of single largest party with just 197 parliamentary seats, suffering a reduction of a whopping 202 seats.
