The nature of revolt prior to 1857 was undirected that is it was mostly localised in smaller area,leaderless,no popular support etc.It was suppressed easily by the Britishers.The revolt of 1857 changed the nature of resistance as it was great blow to the British raj with power and direction to some extent.

The nature of the British before 1857 was not the same. They accepted the religious customs which people followed and never interfered.They came as a borrower.
This was because of the nutritious and tasty spicesand traditional life.On seeing the wealth which India had, British began looting and gradually they began interfering in the matters like the customs.They began making Indians as slaves and made king to accept the Crucial offers like Subsidiary alliance etc.
