The educated people of third state thought that the position of a person should be depend on its Merit. this idea was put forward by the many philosophers like John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau Monstesquieu proposed a division of power within the government between the legislative, the executive and the judiciary. Rousseau carried the idea forward proposing a form of government based on social contract between people and their representatives. Locke sought to refute the doctrine of the divine and absolute right of the monarch. this was the role of the philosophers in the French Revolution.
