In the history of colonial India, moneylenders played a significant role. During the time when the Colonial government introduced various land settlements, they began to grow in power. The inability to pay revenue forced the peasant to borrow capital from the moneylender. On the other hand, the moneylender imposed high-interest rates and through deception and cunning measures, including false accounting, falsified signatures and presenting the borrower sign for more substantial amounts than he had obtained, got the peasant more profound into obligation till he broke with his property. Therefore, the peasantry faced dual exploitation; from the colonial government and from these money-lenders.
