What was the status of France as a state before 1789

Before 1789 French society was divided into three estates in which the members of first estates and second estates were the clergy and the nobility they enjoyed certain privileges from birth and where exempted from paying taxes while the third estates included peasants businessman and others people of the society they have to pay tax.

France was a full fledged territorial State before 1789. The changes that came about in the wake of the revolution were:-

1. The monarchy lost a lot of their power. They were no longer autocratic.

2. The power was transferred from the monarchy to a body of French citizens termed as Active Citizens who could vote.
