Tripartite Treaty was made on June, 1838 between the British rulers, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Shah Suja, the new ruler of Kabul.

British Viceroy Lord Auckland wanted to make a treaty with Amir Dost Muhammad, the earlier Afghan ruler to stop Russian infiltration.

But as Dost Mohammad demanded Peshwar, Lord Auckland contacted Maharaja Ranjit Singh, as that city belonged to his kingdom.

Together, they replaced Dost Muhammad with Shah Shuja, the ruler of Sindh on Afghan throne, in return of some monetary benefits.
