Amritsar was originally named as Ramdaspur, in the memory of Sikh Guru Ram Das.
Later, it was renamed after the holy tank that was dug by Guru Ram Das and named as Amritsar, where ‘Amrit’ meant ‘nectar’ and ‘sar’ meant ‘pool’.
Apart from this large tank, there are four more sacred pools in this city.
This city is also famous for housing Harmandir Sahib gurdwara, which is located at the center of Amritsar Lake.
It is the main pilgrimage site of the Sikhs.
