Explanation:
The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse political, economic, military, religious and social causes. An uprising in several sepoy companies of the Bengal army was sparked by the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle February, 1857. The cartridges were rumored to have been made from cow and pig fat.
The revolt of 1857, where the first shot against the British was fired by Mangal Pandey, had several reasons-
1) the guns the Indian sepoys used were branded unholy as there was a mix of fact and fantasy that the cartridges the used for the gun were made of cow fat, in a country where cow is considered mother.
2) the cartridges could only be used by tearing it with mouth.
3) general sense of rebellion.
