He was a cavalry officer under Tipu Sultan, which he left, along with several other soldiers, during the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War; and after the end of the war, he started capturing villages which were given by Mysore to the Marathas. In the year 1794, he was forced to escape by Dhondu Pant, an officer of the Maratha Army.
