There was disputes for distribution of water from the rivers of Krishna and Godavari. The states involved are Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhrapradesh. To resolve the water disputes the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal and the Godavari Water Dispute Tribunals were set up by the Government of India in the year 1969. These tribunals were set up under Interstate River Water Dispute Act of 1956. The tribunals awarded water to all the party states. The state of Maharashtra built a large dam on river Koyana in Satara district . The river Koyana is a tributary of Krishna river and originates from Mahabaleswar. The states of Karnataka and Andhrapradesh objected to the diversion of water from this dam. They cmplained about shortage of water for their share on the down stream of river Krishna
