1. From year 1294 to the time of French Revolution in 1789, people of France were expected to strictly follow something known as Sumptuary laws.
2. Sumptuary laws tried to control the behaviour of those considered social inferiors, preventing them from wearing certain clothes, consuming certain food and beverages (mostly alchohol), and preventing them from hunting game in certain areas.
3. Thus , no. of clothes bought by per person per year were regulated. Not only by income , but also by social rank.
