Leading Roger to the door and bidding him good night, Roger wants to say something other than "thank you ma'am" but can't think of anything appropriate. When he turns to look at Mrs. Jones in the doorway, he barely gets the words "thank you" out of his mouth before she closes the door. According to Hughes, Roger will never see him again.
