Additional information -

The story begins with the meeting of Roger, a teenage boy, and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, an older woman walking home from work late one night. He tries to steal her purse, but because it's so heavy and Mrs. Jones is quite fat, he breaks the strap instead. She beats him and grabs his shirt, asking if he is ashamed of himself.

Roger admits he does. Mrs. Jones notices that her face is dirty and her hair is uncombed; she asks if anyone is following her. When he says no, she drags him home with her, saying that once she's done with him, she'll never forget she met him.

When Roger and Mrs. Jones arrive at her house, she asks if he has had dinner. She assumes that since he tried to steal her purse, she must be hungry. But we learn that he wanted her money to buy a pair of blue suede shoes. When Mrs. Jones tells Roger that she could have asked him for money, he doesn't quite believe her.

Mrs. Jones explains to Roger that she too was once young and couldn't afford the things she wanted. He admits that he too did some pretty shameful things as a teenage boy. During the meal, she refrains from embarrassing Roger by not asking him anything else about his life; instead, he talks about his job at a hotel beauty salon where he meets women with different hair colors.

At the end of the story, Mrs. Jones gives Roger ten dollars to buy blue suede shoes and tells him not to steal her purse or anyone else's purse because shoes bought with stolen money cause more trouble than they are worth. Leading Roger to the door and bidding him good night, Roger wants to say something other than "thank you ma'am" but can't think of anything appropriate. When he turns to look at Mrs. Jones in the doorway, he barely gets the words "thank you" out of his mouth before she closes the door. According to Hughes, Roger will never see him again.
