Because it literally is the fuel of our body. We always talk of calories nowdays. Calories are nothing but a unit of heat energy. When we say, for example, that a 200ml pack of juice has 96 calories, we mean that 200ml of that substance(in this case juice) would yeild 96 calories when completely digested by our body. In the outside world, 96 calories will be required to totally burn the juice.
In case of actual fuel, let’s take the example of aviation. Aviation fuel, one of the purest forms of petroleum, is used in jet engines to inject the air being sucked by the turbines with fuel, igniting it, and when the air comes out of the engine, it gets heated up and provides thrust because it has been accelerated.
Similarly, you can say that our body burns the fuel to extract energy, in the form of calories, which is then converted to other forms (work is done using mechanical energy, nervous system functions using electrical energy). Thus, any kind of food we eat is fuel, which like in cars and aircrafts, is ‘burnt’ (in reality it is acted upon by enzymes to break it down, which releases energy).
