Answer:

Oesophagus, commonly known as the food pipe, is a long tube made of muscles that connects our mouth to the stomach. The food that we eat, after being thoroughly chewed in the mouth and broken into small pieces and mixed with saliva, moves down the oesophagus, to the stomach for digestion. The oesophagus performs continuous expansion and contraction to push the food down to the stomach. This continuous or repeated contraction and relaxation is known as peristalsis. If the peristaltic movement of the oesophagus did not occur, the food could not be moved down the oesophagus and thus the digestive system would have collapsed.
