It you reverse the terminals of the battery, the direction of current is also reversed. The reason is that, when the direction of the current is changed, the north and south poles of the electromagnet are also reversed. In case of direct current (DC), the change in the polarity occurs once whereas in alternating current (AC), the direction of current is constantly changing, so north and south poles will also change continuously.
