Meristem has an ability to divide and grow. It encompasses division of cells that later on differentiates into specialized cells and perform special functions. If a meristem stops dividing, first thing that happens is a incomplete plant without complete structure and functions.

The division process stops and can lead to plant's death as well. Different parts of a plant performs different functions but if the parts are not fully grown or formed, there will be no proper function.
