We know that :

Alkanes are represented by C ₙ H ₂ₙ₊₂

Put n = 3 in the formula  :

Formula = C₃ H₃ₓ₂₊₂

              = C₃ H₆₊₂

              = C₃ H₈

Now 4 hydrogen atoms are removed from this :

Formula becomes C₃ H₈₋₄

                             = C₃ H₄

This compound becomes C₃H₄

This is how alkynes are represented !

Note that alkyne = C₂ₙ₋₂

Here C = 3

Alkyne = C₃H₂ₓ₃₋₂

            = C₃H₆₋₂

            = C₃H₄

This proves that this is Alkyne of 3 carbon group.

Carbon having 3 will have word root = prop.

Hence this is propyne .

The name of the compound is propyne .

Hope it helps !
