This is because particles of dust and smoke scatter a beam of light.
another example is when sunlight passes through a canopy in dense forest.

Tyndall effect

Explanation:

The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by the particles in a colloid or fine suspension.

This effect can been seen when the particles in a light-transmitting medium disperses the light. Example, The dust particles in air or flour in water.

In everyday life, Tyndall effect can be witnessed when the smoke from a motorcycle is visible in blue colour where the smoke emitted contains particles from the burnt engine oil and causes the light to be scattering. So only the blue light is visible to us.
