Given : 4x² + x + a = 0

To Find : Nature of roots if a < 0

Solution:

4x² + x + a = 0

D = (1)² - (4)4(a)

=> D = 1  - 16a

a < 0

=> 16a < 0

Multiplying both sides by -ve sign

=> -16a > 0

D  = 1 - 16a

=> D   >  1

=> D > 0

Hence Roots are real and unequal

if D = 0 , roots equal and real

D > 0 roots real and unequal

D < 0 roots are imaginary
