This question is taken from Gandhiji's autobiography "My Experiments with Truth".

When Gandhiji and his friend were addicted to cigarette smoking, they started smoking cigarettes from the remaining stubs of cigarettes and also started stealing money from servant's pocket to buy cigarettes. They also started burning a special type of wooden stalk like a cigarette. Soon they realizes their mistake that it is not right to secretly smoke cigarettes without the permission from their elders. This guilt provoked them to commit suicide.

In order to commit suicide, they both brought the seeds of the Dhatura from the forest. They went to a temple and lit a lamp and prayed. Then both of them started trying to eat Dhatura seeds to commit suicide but they did not dare more. Although they had swallowed one or two seeds, they could not swallow any more seeds. They realized that it is easy to think of committing suicide, but to implement it is a very difficult task. They then gave up the idea of suicide, and both of them also decided to give up cigarette's smoking.
