1.   When the religion influenced the politics in exclusive and partisan terms.

2.  The demands of one religious group are formed in opposition to another.

3.   When one religion and its followers are pitted against another.

Communalism is extremely antithetical to the ideals of Secularism, where all religions co-exist in peace and harmony.

Communalism gives birth to hatred among religions,sects and creeds and creates hatred, ill-feeling and riots among people belonging to different religions.

This became acute under the rule of Mohammad Ali Jinnah who was in favour of partitioning of India.
