According to Fajans rule when two atoms approach each other to form a bond the cation attracts the electron cloud of the anion and distorts the electron colud of the anion.
The distortion by the anion on the cation is very poor due to the compact charge density of the cation.
This distortion by the cation on the anion induces an ionic character in the molecule and lowers the covalent character.
The extent of polarisation (or the tendency of distorting the electron cloud ) by the cation on the anion depends on the charge and radius of the cation. This is known as ionic potential.
Ionic potential=charge on the cation/ radius of the cation.
