when hot water is poured in thick glass tumbler it breaks because its inner surface expands.however due to low thermal conductivity of glass.the expansion of outer surface is quite small ,due to uneven expansion of outer and inner surface the tumbler breaks .

The inner layer tends to expand more rapidly than the outer layer thus producing phenomenon of unequal expansion resulting in cracks due to the resulting pressure.
