When KMnO4 acts as an oxidising agent and ultimately forms MnO42-, MnO2, Mn2O3 and Mn2+, then the
number of electrons transferred in each case is :
(1) 4, 3, 1,5
(2) 1,5, 3,7
(3) 1,3,4,5

Answer : The correct option is, (3) 1, 3, 4, 5

Explanation :

As per question, KMnO_4 acts as an oxidizing agent. The of KMnO_4 with MnO_4^{2-},MnO_2,Mn_2O_3\text{ and }Mn^{2+} are:

(1) MnO_4^-+1e^-\rightarrow MnO_4^{2-}

In this reaction, there are 1 electron are transferred.

(2) MnO_4^-+4H^++3e^-\rightarrow MnO_2+2H_2O

In this reaction, there are 3 electrons are transferred.

(3) 2MnO_4^-+10H^++8e^-\rightarrow MnO_2O_3+5H_2O

In this reaction, there are 8 electrons are transferred for 2 manganese. But for 1 manganese there are 4 electrons are transferred.

(4) MnO_4^-+8H^++5e^-\rightarrow Mn^{2+}+4H_2O

In this reaction, there are 5 electrons are transferred.

Hence, the number of electrons transferred in each case are, 1, 3, 4, 5
