the litmus paper turns red suggesting that the gas is acidic in nature...

when brought near dry litmus it will not turn red whereas it remains blue
But when brought near wet litmus it turns red due to the acidic nature of Hydrochloric acid as HCl gas dissolves in water present in litmus paper
