♦ As given

• Magnesium is burnt in Chlorine gas

• Product formed is Magnesium Chloride

♦ First we should know about Redox reaction

• Redox reaction :- A Chemical reaction in which there is change in oxidation state of atoms .

>>Here

• Red → Reduction of oxidation state of atom during Chemical reaction.

• Ox → Oxidation of oxidation state of atom during Chemical reaction .

 \underline{\textbf{Note :- }} In a Redox reaction reduction and oxidation takes place simentenusly , i.e they always takes place in pair.

♦ Now we will write the chemical equations :-

 \sf{ Mg + Cl_2 \longrightarrow MgCl_2}

♦ Now by Considering Reduction part :-

→ Here Reduction means Gaining of electron .

 \sf{{Cl_{2}}^0 + 2e^-\longrightarrow {Cl_2}^{-2}}

♦ So here Chlorine is reduced by gaining \sf{2e^-}
