When muddy water is allowed to stand, the mud takes a long time to settle down. A white solid
called alum can help the mud to settle down faster. Why do you think mud settles faster on
adding alum?

Answer:

because it's a solid and as we know that liquid have high intermolecular space so the moleces in alum take space in those empty space and increase the force of attraction and now the molecules in muddy water have no space and they are held together by the force of attraction
