Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens was elected as the President of Chile in 1970. He won as the leader of the Unidad Popular ("Popular Unity") coalition.

On 3rd November, 1970, Allende assumed the Presidency. His Presidency faced a premature end in 1973 when the Chilean Senate deemed his Presidency to be "unlawful".
