Lipids which are present in the cell membrane are synthesized in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

This, however, does not contain the essential ribosomes but anyway, the necessary proteins are produced even in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

The ribosomes are attached to the endoplasmic reticulum where they help in protein synthesis.
