While Split is the modern name for the city, it is the latest in a long list of names for the city. The Romans renamed it Spalatum, which evolved into Spalatro in the Middla Ages, then to Split for most, but  Spalato for the Italians and, after a brief 19th dalliance with Spljet, it became Split once more.
