Pabitra Mohan Pradhan was born at Poipal in Dhenkanal, Orissa on February 8, 1910 and he took up the job of a teacher after completion of his academic education.

He was arrested and imprisoned in 1939 by the British against whom he was fighting for freedom. However, he climbed over the jail walls in 1942 to join the `Quit India` Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.
