I will write about two incidents on either side of the border between India and Pakistan. These incidents have striking similarities, which I will mention at the end.
Instead of writing about the good sides, or targeting India/Pakistan, I write about the human stories on both sides. These are not humane. These are incidents that should stop in both countries. Such incidents tarnish the names of both countries.
In Pakistan - Innocent children bore the brunt of a powerful man who is a Federal Minister (Science & Technology, no less) in PTI Government. They were sent to jail, and released later when the media played out the story. The children and owners of the cow live in a Kachcha makaan (meaning - make shift housing, which is more a shelter like than a house).
The reason? The cow owned by the family of these children happened to wander into the farmhouse of the minister. The minister ordered his men to confiscate the cow. When owners of the cow went to fetch the cow, they were beaten up the minister’s men. The minister then lodged a complain and members of the family of the owners, including the children were arrested and put into jail, for beating up the minister’s men .
So, the minister is still not satisfied. He tries to call the IG (Inspector General) Jan Mohammad of Islamabad, who didn’t take the minister’s call. So, the minister is infuriated. How can a lowly IG ignore his call? The minister calls up the Secretary and the IG is transferred from his post. (Funny enough, the Science and Tech minster wasn’t able to find out that the IG was on an official trip abroad to attend a seminar, as IG Of Islamabad). The Secretary called up the Prime Minister, Imran Khan. And, on verbal orders of the PM, the IG was transferred.
The Supreme Court took suo-moto notice of the case and had the IG reinstated, and the children are now out on bail. Last I read that the case has been settled on basis of reconciliation.
