The synaptic cleft is a gap between the pre- and postsynaptic cells that is about 20 nm wide. The small volume of the cleft allows neurotransmitterconcentration to be raised and lowered rapidly. An autapse is a chemical (or electrical) synapse formed when the axon of one neuron synapses with its own dendrites.
