I assume you are talking about colouring a surface with pigments where grey is mixture of black and white..
Red and white make pink (tint)
Red and black make wine (tone)
So to answer the question -
Grey and red mixed gives tones of red from pink at the lightest through blush, blood, garnet to wine at the darkest. The middle colours tend to be quite muddy/brownish when mixed using paint. To simplify a complicated explanation as to why this happens: this is due to using white as in the form of a mixed pigment.
To get clearer middle colours use inks or watercolours by mixing black and red (wine), then dilute with water so a white paper surface shows through and lightens the colour.
