Answer:

The wide variety of resources and apps for English learners continues to expand and offers more and more creative learning solutions. But out of the 100’s of resources available, which ones should you choose as your English learning companions?

Like a lot of things in life, when there is a huge choice of options, we can easily get overwhelmed. Apps for English learners are no different. So I suggest defining only a few apps which will be most relevant to your English needs and using them consistently, instead of occasionally using many different resources.

The important thing is to choose an app which is aligned with your English goals, easy to use, fun, and engaging.

In this article, I select 5 resources and apps for English learners which will help you develop your language skills in vocabulary, grammar, writing reading, and listening, as well as increasing your general knowledge and even cultural awareness.

In spite of the title of this article, my recommended apps are not specifically aimed at English learners, as they are targeted at native speakers. However, if you have an intermediate to advanced level of English, I highly recommend having contact with resources that are designed and written for native speakers.

This is because the language will not be graded and will give you exposure to “real-life” English. If you want to understand natives better and start speaking more native-like, absorb content which natives absorb.

1. Grammarly

Grammarly

Improve Grammar and Write More Accurately in Emails, Slides, and Essays

If you frequently write in English, whether it is for MBA essays, work emails, or PowerPoint slides, Grammarly is a must.

Grammarly is essentially a proofreader. It’s one of the best apps for English learners and natives for grammar and writing correction.

Once you install the plugin, it automatically checks your grammar, punctuation, and spelling on emails, Word documents, text on slides, etc.

Correcting your English writing is an effective way to improve your grammar as well because you are able to visualize the mistakes you’re making. So with Grammarly, you can develop your writing skills and get better at grammar simultaneously.

Grammarly offers a free version, which offers lots of features. This is enough for most people, but if you want the extras, you can pay for the premium version.

I use Grammarly to help check my ebooks, blog posts, and emails for errors. It has helped me avoid typos and mistakes, as well as saving me lots of time because it cuts out a lot of the manual checking I had to do in the past.

Who is this for?

Professionals who want to write grammatically correct emails, CV’s, and text on presentation slides without spelling or grammar errors.

Students who want to improve writing and grammar simultaneously.

Bloggers and Authors.

2. Blinkist

Blinkist

Increase Knowledge through Non-fiction Bestsellers Quicker Than Ever Before

Reading or listening to topics which interest you in English is a great way to improve your level while increasing general knowledge.

If you’re like me, you’d like to read more books but just don’t get enough time, due to work commitments and family.

Well, currently Blinkist’s slogan is “Fit reading into your life.” And for those who say they have not got time to read, Blinkist is an intelligent solution as an app for English learners with an intermediate to advanced level, as well as natives.

The app transforms bestselling non-fiction books (more than 3000 of them) into condensed ‘packs’ that you can read or listen to in just 15 minutes. Imagine being able to read a book in 15 minutes!

It summarises the key ideas from bestselling non-fiction books. So essentially, you can acquire the best parts of a top-selling book on your way to work. Then another book on your way back home!
