The shortest line in the poem is literally as short as you can get: “Bare.” I think that this is so because the author, Langston Hughes, wanted to put emphasis on the word. Emphasis enough that the only word that the audience has to process in that moment is “bare,” thus increasing the meaning of the word in the poem.
