The message the poet conveys in the poem ‘The banyan tree’, is the tree is always protective and static it is the living creatures that enjoy its protection and then abandon it.

Rabindranath Tagore was an ardent Nature-lover. Since his childhood he loved the tranquillity and somnolence offered by Nature. Thus through his poem, ‘The Banyan Tree’, the poet tries to convey the love and protection offered by an old banyan tree. The tree used to be the favourite haunt of the poet when he was a child.  

Devotedly the tree offered shade and shelter to all who visited it, but with time all the beneficiaries conveniently forget of its service and abandon it.
