The movement of ions causes the flow of current through an electrolyte.

  • An electrolyte is a salt that when added to water conducts electricity as it acts as a charge carrier in form of an ion.
  • On dissociation, it releases a positively charged ion which is called a cation, and a negatively charged ion which is called an anion.
  • Positive charged-ion moves towards the cathode ( negatively charged electrode)  and negative charged-ion moves towards the anode(positively charged electrode) and conduct electricity in the solution.
