2-3 layers of cotton clothes can make a warmer and better sweater because:-
COTTON IS AN INSULATOR OF HEAT. IT TRAPS HEAT AND DOES NOT LET IT ESCAPE INTO THE AIR. SO IF WE MAKE A SWEATER USING IT, THE SWEATER TRAPS HEAT BETWEEN THEM AND DOES NOT LET IT ESCAPE

2 -3 layers of cotton clothes will better than warmth a thick sweater
Basically air gets trapped in between the layers of multiple clothes and gets warm slowly which keeps you warm. More the number of layers, more air trapping and more warm you feel. A single thick sweater won't be that efficient in trapping air as thin /thick multiple layers.
