When one is reading a book, the cerebrum is in control.
What is the cerebrum?
- The cerebrum forms the major part of the forebrain.
- It is thrown into dense and irregular folds, which form the cerebral cortex.
- The cerebral cortex is divided into two hemispheres connected by a tract of fibers- the corpus callosum.
- These hemispheres are divided into 4 lobes:
- Frontal Lobe: Responsible for planning, rational thinking, emotional processing, speech and reading fluency, etc.
- Parietal Lobe: Responsible for integrating information from various sense organs, helps in feeling pain, pressure, the difference in temperature, etc.
- Temporal Lobe: Auditory processing, complex visual processing, memory formation, etc.
- Occipital Lobe: Major area for visual information processing.
What happens when we read a book?
- When we read a book, the frontal and temporal lobes work together with other nerves in the brain to comprehend language.
- The Wernicke's area in the frontal lobe is mainly involved in the comprehension of reading.
- The temporal lobe also plays a part in recognizing and using language.
Thus, the cerebrum controls our reading abilities.
