In 1900, while studying radiation emitted from radium, Paul Villard, discovered the gamma (y-rays) radiation. Unlike optical light and x-rays, mirrors can not capture and reflect  y-rays/  As gamma rays move, they collide in the crystal with electrons.

Gamma rays are generated when the radioactive atomic nuclei are disintegrated and when certain subatomic particles are decayed. The daughter nucleus is then sometimes generated in an excited state when an unstable atomic nucleus declines into a more stable nucleus.
