There is no national language of India so far.
The main reason behind India being without a national language is the protest against Hindi by non-hindi speaking Dravidan Southern States.

Official Language Act, 1963. This act declared Hindi as official language of union governent and English was given status of “Subsidiary official language” of the union.

There is a difference between a national language and an official language. While a national language would have a patriotic and nationalistic identity, an official language is one which is designated for communication at the official level.

It is also true that States are allowed to select any language as State Language.
