There are mainly three types of fire extinguishers:
1. Soda acid fire extinguisher:
Soda acid fire extinguisher is the mixture of sodium bicarbonate and an acid which is generally sulphuric acid however, initially tartaric acid was used. The acid and sodium bicarbonate react together to form the water, carbon dioxide gas and sodium sulphate and the carbon dioxide gas comes out with water in the form of fountain under pressure and that acts as a fire extinguisher as:
2NaHCO3 + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + 2H2O + 2CO2
2. Foam based fire extinguisher : Foam extinguisher used air as an extinguishing agent. Following reaction takes place in foam fire extinguisher:
A stable foam of carbon dioxide is formed due to the presence of saponin which covers the entire surface of burning oil and cuts off the air supply and thus extinguishes fire.
3. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher:
Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are mainly filled with carbon dioxide under very high pressure. The carbon dioxide gas will displace the oxygen gas which is supporting the fire.
