Mirror neurons are involved in imitation. They were discovered in the frontal cortex of macaque (monkey).

They have been later found in regions of the premotor cortex, somatosensory cortex, supplementary motor area, and parietal cortex. They have been named so because they mirror activities and functions, i.e. they imitate actions.

Mirror neurons fire when an organism performs an activity or when the organism sees an activity being performed. Hence they imitate a firing action although in reality the organism itself is not performing an activity.
