In medieval and early modern Europe, different systems were used to divide people into estates. One of the most used systems was the “French Ancien Regime” which divided the society into three estates. The king and the queen formed the monarchy in this system.

The "First Estate" includes the clergy. The "Second Estate" includes the nobles. The clergy and the noble were rich people who led a comfortable life and extracted taxes from the "Third Estate" which consisted of labor and urban and rural peasants.
