The samaj was founded by the sannyasi (ascetic) Dayanand Saraswati on 10 April 1875. Members of the Arya Samaj believe in one God and reject the worship of idols.

This Hindu reform movement was founded on 10 April 1875 by Dayanand Saraswati who was basically an ascetic.

The members of this movement believe in the existence of one god and denounce any form of idol worship.

Dayanand Saraswati was also an Indian socialist who gave the first clarion call for Swaraj which effectively meant "India for Indians" in 1876.

It was later also taken up by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
