In the story “Lost Spring”, the writer was greeted by the sister in-law of Mukesh, when she visited his house.

She was the wife of the elder brother of Mukesh and was perhaps only a few years older than him.

This young woman looked very weak, as she smiled pleasantly at the writer while cooking the dinner for her family, consisting of her husband, father in-law and Mukesh.

She had the due respect as the daughter in-law of the family and carried on her responsibilities, in spite of all hardships.

Mukesh’s elder brother’s wife greeted the author as she entered his house. She was quite young; she had begun to command respect as the bahu (daughter-in-law) of the house. She had to shoulder the household responsibilities such as cooking, washing, etc. When Mukesh’s father entered, she withdrew and veiled her face as was the custom.
