Naturopathy grew out of the 'nature cures' practised in 19th-century Austrian and German health spas, and was introduced to the USA by a German, Benedict Lust, who founded the American School of Naturopathy in 1896. John Kellogg famously used natural therapies at his sanatorium in Battle Creek, Michigan.
